New Apple Mobile Banking Updates

Another update is coming to Mobile Banking for Apple users! Educators Credit Union is always working with our Mobile Banking developer to give you the best experience possible within our app.

This latest update will:

  • Make general improvements to biometric authentication tools like fingerprint and face scan logins.
  • Adjust the current Snapshot feature to improve functionality.

This latest update will limit app availability to Apple devices that have iOS 10 and higher. This change is to ensure user data is secure since Apple will no longer be providing security updates to the phone. Users may still be able to use Online Banking in their internet browser on their smart device.

More updates are coming soon! Keep an eye on www.ecu.com and our social media channels for the latest.

Why Warranty? Because it Helps

Educators Credit Union is helping members save hundreds of thousands of dollars this year with our Vehicle Service Agreement from IWS.

IWS offers affordable extended warranties that help Educators Credit Union members save. In 2018, we have saved members $204,365 in mechanical breakdown repairs thanks to these vehicle warranties!

  • Any Educators Credit Union member can add on an IWS Vehicle Service Agreement as long as their vehicle is eligible.
  • IWS warranties are affordably priced but still offer the same protections as plans that are much more expensive.
  • You don’t need an Educators Credit Union vehicle loan to qualify for our warranty. If you have a non-Educators loan, ask for a What’s Your Score?® credit report so that we can see if Educators Credit Union can save you money by refinancing your loan.

You can add your name to the more than 575 people who’ve protected themselves so far this year with a Vehicle Service Agreement. Visit any Educators Credit Union branch and ask the greeter to speak with a Member Finance Representative or Vehicle Specialist about these warranties today.

It’s the last week to earn entries for the September Saver’s Sweepstakes drawing! In October, at least one Educators Credit Union member will win $5,000 for saving money in their Saver’s Sweepstakes account.

The Saver’s Sweepstakes is a prize-based savings account that gives members the chance to win money each month. All they have to do is open the account and save at least $25 each month to earn an entry. Each entry counts towards that month’s $100 prize drawing, that quarter’s $1,000 drawing and the $5,000 grand prize drawing.

To kick off the Saver’s Sweepstakes, at least one Educators Credit Union member will win $5,000. Just open your account at any Educators branch or by calling 262.886.5900 and start saving before Saturday, Sep. 29. The winner will be announced on Thursday, Oct. 18.

Each individual — limited by social security number — can have a maximum six entries per month, 18 entries per quarter and 72 entries per year in the statewide drawing. Account is subject to a $10 withdrawal penalty with your first and second withdrawal from the account. The account will be closed after your third withdrawal. Account withdrawal could impact your total number of entries. A closed account will result in the forfeiture of all sweepstakes entries. Do These Tasks Now to Protect Your Home Later

Fall is right around the corner and it’s the perfect time to start preparing your home for the winter. Not only is it easier to take care of these tasks while the weather is still warmer, but it can also end up saving you hundreds or thousands of dollars in the future.

  • Change your furnace filter. Most homes should change their furnace filters every few months. While a lot of people won’t do that, replacing it every season can go a long way to keeping your furnace healthy. Should it break, you’ll be looking at a huge cost for your home.
    • You should also want to consider having a professional come in and giving the furnace a quick tune-up.
  • Clear your gutters. Few things can lead to a costly repair as quickly as water damage. If you want to avoid water damaging your home, clear your gutters, so all of the rain and melting snow is being sent away from the foundation.
  • Shut off and run your outside faucets. Don’t get stuck having a flooded basement because of a burst pipe. Find the shutoff valve for your home’s faucets leading outside and turn them off. Then run the tap until no more water is coming out.
  • Seal your windows. One of the easiest ways to spend a lot of money in the winter is by heating your home. If your windows aren’t properly caulked and treated, heat can easily escape. Go outside and look at each window to ensure you’re keeping all of the heat in.
  • Check your outside vents. Not only will clearing your outside vents keep your furnace running efficiently, but any debris preventing air from leaving these exits is a fire hazard. Make the rounds and see that any vent has nothing blocking it, or event coming close.

Have any other tips homeowners should know about preparing for the winter? Add a comment below to help everyone save money and be safe.

Helping Students Get on the Road with MPS Drive

Educators Credit Union is working with Milwaukee Public Schools to give high school students an experience many haven’t had in school for years: driver’s education.

Through additional funding, MPS offers its students driver’s education through a program called MPS Drive. The program offers low-cost education and assistance so  more students have the opportunity to get licensed.

“This program promotes three things: equity, workforce development and public safety,” said MPS Recreation Coordinator Annie McGinnity Kubes. “Our goal is that all of our MPS students are graduating with a diploma and a valid driver’s license. We know that employment outcomes are significantly higher when those two things are paired together.”

In its first two and a half years, MPS Drive helped more than 3,300 students. Nearly 97% of those students passed their temporary license examination.

“This shows that it’s something our young people are invested in and work hard for,” said Kubes.

Educators Credit Union reached out to the program after Vice President of Auto & Lease Donna Klug heard a news spot about the program.

“I was driving to work one day and heard a blurb about MPS getting a second year of funding for this driver’s education program,” said Klug. “It benefited inner city kids who couldn’t otherwise afford it, and I thought, ‘That’s something that Educators would definitely want to be a part of.’”

Educators Credit Union has since provided financial backing and gotten involved in the classroom. Employees from Educators Credit Union come to classes and teach students about the basics of car buying, the costs of owning a car, maintaining and building credit to help finance a car, and much more.

“Educators has been a tremendous champion of the program,” said Kubes. “They are really helping students understand the financial component that comes with having a license.”

It’s an important lesson that Educators Credit Union is passionate about supporting. It’s important to help provide an opportunity to these students that they haven’t had for the last decade.

“I just paid for driver’s education for my daughter, and it was $300,” said Klug. “If you have a family that can’t afford it, you don’t get the chance to learn these lessons. Who’s going to teach these students that lesson? It’s also an opportunity for that household. The kids can now get themselves to and from work and may be able to help their family get to work.”

Educators Credit Union Helps Fill Milwaukee’s Backpacks

Educators Credit Union opened its doors to 88Nine and the Milwaukee Business Journal for the third annual No Empty Backpacks School Supply Drive. It was yet another successful year, as Educators Credit Union and other Milwaukee businesses were able to collect 50,137 items for students at eight Milwaukee Public Schools elementary schools. That’s 13,000 more items than we collected last year!

This year’s drive started on July 23, when supply drive bins were dropped off at Educators Credit Union branches. People looking to donate could find a list of needed supplies on the 88Nine website. They could then have the supplies shipped directly to 88Nine or drop them off at one of the 27 donation locations throughout the city.

Volunteers then came to 88Nine to help sort the supplies for delivery on Wednesday, Aug. 29. Once they finished, boxes lined the 88Nine studios and waited to be shipped out for the new school year.

The supplies collected were donated to Craig Montessori School, Clara Barton School, Andrew S. Douglas School, Lloyd Barbee Montessori School, Dr. Martin Luther King School, Kagel School, Starms Early Childhood and Ralph H. Metcalfe School in Milwaukee.

Thank you to everyone who donated or helped support this cause. You truly are making a difference in our communities!

Avoid Eating Away Your Money

When of the easiest ways to lose out on your money is from an everyday necessity: food. Often, we’re overpaying to eat out or buying food that ends up going to waste. So, how do we save and get money back while still eating the food we love? Here are four tips to save but not lose out on the food we like:

  •  Buy frozen. Frozen food lasts longer than fresh food. Frozen veggies, fruits and meat can last months compared to the days that they’ll last in the fridge or on the counter. Frozen foods can also be cheaper than the fresh stuff.
  •  Make a meal plan. Plan everything to a T, even the nights you can eat out. By having each meal carefully coordinated, it can limit that urge to head to the drive-thru and grab something on the way home. Take it a step further and prepare your meals at the start of the week.
  •  Check the expiration dates. Food waste is a big problem, especially for your wallet. Getting even an extra day can go a long way to avoiding having to throw your food in the garbage or down the drain. It also saves you a trip to the store to get something to replace the food that went bad.
  •  Plan ahead and take advantage of sales. Coupon clipping is nearly extinct, but that shouldn’t mean we don’t take careful consideration into how we shop. Pull up the store’s website and plan on taking advantage of specials for a day or week. This even works for saving while eating out! Many restaurants offer free kids meals during the week with the purchase of an adult entree.

As with most things, it’s easier said than done, but working towards using some of these tips can lead to extra savings. Over time, those savings will stack up and you’ll see the difference in your account. Comment below with more helpful tips for saving on the cost of food!
