Thank You For Your Loyalty!

Educators Credit Union deposited nearly $3.1 million into more than 103,000 members’ accounts on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018 to reward them for their loyalty.

The deposit is the result of Educators Credit Union’s Loyalty Pay Back program. The initiative thanks the credit union’s members based on how many products and services they use with Educators. Members who had three or four services were in tier one, tier two was members with five or six services, and the final tier was for members with seven or more services.

“The Loyalty Pay Back Reward is an opportunity for us to thank members for their commitment to Educators Credit Union,” said CEO and President Linda Hoover. “Thanks to their investment in Educators, we are able to provide first-class service, provide educational resources to students throughout our community and support local charitable organizations in their effort to improve the areas where we live and work.”

Over the last three years, Educators Credit Union has deposited more than $7 million into members’ accounts with Loyalty Pay Back.

Travel Safe and Sound!

Whether you’re traveling out of state to see your family this holiday season or going on a vacation to avoid the snow, you want to make sure your cards are safe and ready to use. There’s nothing worse than finally arriving to your destination and realizing your cards are blocked for potential fraud.

Here are some tips to help you ensure spending on your trip goes smoothly.

Call Educators before you travel!

Be sure to add “Call Educators” to your to-do list before you travel. When you call, chat or visit a branch, tell the representative you want to add a travel note to your account.

Be sure to share where you’re going, if you’re driving or flying, how long you’re staying, and when you’ll return. That way when charges come through that are outside of your regular spending pattern and area, it is less likely to be flagged as fraud. You live and work in southeastern Wisconsin, and you’re driving to Texas to see your in-laws. When you add travel notes, Educators’ credit card processor knows that charges at restaurants, gas stations and a hotel along the way are not fraud, just you seeing the sights on the way to your destination!

This is important, even if you use Ctrl, Educators’ card-control app. Our fraud monitoring system checks purchases before they even get to your Ctrl settings, so travel notes are still needed.

Be prepared: Know the numbers

It’s important to understand the fraud monitoring process of your debit and credit card issuer.

The Steps:

  • When fraud is suspected, you will receive an automatic email from Educators, and you can reply via email with “fraud” or “no fraud.”
  • One minute after the email, you will receive a text message from shortcode 32874, which also has the “fraud” or “no fraud” option.
  • If there is no response to the email or text message, you’ll receive an automated phone call to deny or confirm fraud.

It’s a good idea to enter the text code and phone number into your cell phone contacts so know it is a legitimate fraud prevention text message or call should it pop up on your phone while traveling.

As a side note: it’s always important that you keep your contact information up to date with us. If you’re traveling, it’s even more important, especially your cell phone number or email address. That information can be updated in Online Banking or by calling/messaging our Member Response Center at 262.886.5900.

If your card is declined and you don’t receive a fraud notice, you can call us to find out the cause of the denial. Use the numbers in the paragraph above to call and speak to an Educators Member Response Agent. The Member Response Center is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. If it’s outside of those hours, you can call 888.526.0404 for assistance with declined transactions on Educators credit or debit cards.

If your card is declined

It happened. Your card got declined. Here are some things to check that might resolve the issue quickly, and before you have to call Educators.

If you use Ctrl there are several settings that may be causing the denial.

  1. Is the card turned off? If you usually keep your credit card turned off, it may have slipped your mind to turn it back on before using it on vacation or for a specific purchase.
  2. Is there a location setting on? If you have “My Location” on for that card, and your phone is unable to detect or find your location, turn the “My Location” setting off and try the card again.
  3. Are you overseas? Another location setting in Ctrl is “Block International.” If it’s on and you’re trying to use your card in Canada, Mexico or another country that is not the US, it will be declined.

It is also important (so important, we’re repeating it for you skimmers) to let us know you’ll be traveling. Notes can be added to your account so purchases that are outside your normal spending habits and locations (e.g., shopping and a hotel stay in another state) aren’t flagged as fraud. As we said above, fraud-monitoring blocks kick in before the charge gets to your Ctrl setting, so travel notes are still very important.

Happy travels!

Educators Credit Union Celebrates 10 Saver’s Sweepstakes Winners

Educators Credit Union and The Wisconsin Credit Union League celebrated ten Saver’s Sweepstakes winners on Oct. 18, 2018. The Educators Credit Union members were part of the first-ever Saver’s Sweepstakes drawing, and two of them went home with $5,000 grand prizes.

Five of the ten Educators Credit Union winners, Educators Credit Union staff, The Wisconsin Credit Union League staff, Educators Credit Union Vice Chair Cheryl Kothe, Wisconsin State Senator Van Waangard, and Assistant Deputy Secretary at the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions Greg Reiman came together to celebrate the inaugural winners at Educators’ Home Office in Mt. Pleasant, Wisconsin.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer this account and help our members start building their savings,” said Educators Credit Union CEO and President Linda Hoover.”

After a short introduction, the winners were given their checks and honored individually. Some winners announced their plans for their money as they came to the podium.

“This is going back into my savings,” said one of the two grand prize winners, Cindy Tenuta.

Other winners talked about fixing household appliances, doubling down and putting the money into their Saver’s Sweepstakes accounts, or spending it on vacation. One of the winners wasn’t even planning on opening her Saver’s Sweepstakes account until she went into an Educators Credit Union branch with her friend.

“I was listening to the gentleman set up my friend’s account, and I thought, ‘Well, that’s smart,’” said $100 winner and 20-year Educators Credit Union member Doris Hayes. “We set it up there, and now the money goes into the account automatically each month.”

The Saver’s Sweepstakes is a brand new prize-based savings account created by The Wisconsin Credit Union League with help from several credit unions across the state. Members earn entries into the sweepstakes for every $25 saved each month. They can receive up to six entries monthly. Those entries go towards a $100 monthly drawing, $1,000 quarterly drawing and the $5,000 grand prize drawing.

While the Saver’s Sweepstakes is special because members can win for saving, it was created to help credit union members develop good saving habits.

“Over a very short period of time, members of 14 Wisconsin credit unions saved over $180,000 tied to the Saver’s Sweepstakes program,” said The Wisconsin Credit Union League CEO and President Brett Thompson. “That all helps (the members) improve their financial condition.”

The next group of winners will be picked on Nov. 15. For full entry rules and information, visit www.ecu.com/savers.

The Credit Union Difference

Happy International Credit Union Day, everyone! This year is the 70th anniversary of International Credit Union Day, or the platinum anniversary.

Today is a day to celebrate credit unions and their members. We cannot put into words how much we truly value our member-owners. Every day is a day to celebrate your investment in Educators Credit Union and what it means to us and the community.

How does your membership help us? It means we can offer competitive rates, little to no fees, and directly support our community. This year, Educators Credit Union:

  • Is giving back $3.1 million for Loyalty Pay Back in December.
  • Taught nearly 35,000 local students financial literacy initiatives like EverFi, Banzai, Reality Check Day, our high school branches, co-ops and in-class presentations.
  • Donated more than $400,000 to nearly 100 local charitable organizations.
  • Staff volunteered more than 1,000 hours at local organizations.
  • Supplied more than 100 different volunteers at Junior Achievement of Wisconsin’s BizTown and Finance Park programs.
  • Helped more than 700 MPS students on the path to getting their driver’s license.
  • Saved more than 1,400 members money on buying or leasing a new vehicle.
  • Sponsored or supported 288 community events.
  • Saved members more than $13 million in interest by refinancing their non-Educators loans at lower rates.
  • And so much more!

We cannot accomplish anything on this list without our member-owners. Thank you for supporting Educators Credit Union!

Educators Credit Union Members Are Getting Rewarded!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: Educators Credit Union Loyalty Pay Back season! In 2018, Educators Credit Union is putting a total of $3.1 million into our members’ accounts based on their loyalty.

Educators Credit Union member-owners are the reason we can make a difference in their lives, their families lives, and the lives of their friends and neighbors. Their investment empowers us to:

  • Help members borrow and save money at competitive and fair rates.
  • Donate time and money to nearly 100 local charitable organizations.
  • Teach thousands of area students crucial financial literacy lessons to prepare them for adulthood.
  • Support and help more than 275 local events in our 11-county service area.
  • And so much more!

There is no chance Educators Credit Union could make the impact we do without our members. Every service they use and commit to helps us achieve more in the places where we live and work.

To thank our members for their continued support, the 2018 Loyalty Pay Back Reward will be awarded based on the number of services they use. Payouts will be divided into three groups: member-owners using three to five qualified services, member-owners using five to six qualified services, and member-owners using seven or more qualified services. Qualified services are:

  • Auto Loan or Lease3
  • Business Checking Account4
  • Business Credit Card4
  • Business Line of Credit4
  • Checking Debit Card2
  • Credit Card2
  • Direct Deposit2

  • Home Equity Loan3

Members have until Nov. 30 to add services to their account ahead of Loyalty Pay Back. Educators Credit Union members can use Online Banking, stop in at a branch or call 262.886.5900 to add a new service.

1To qualify, members must be in good standing. Member’s accounts cannot be in the negative and loan payments cannot be past due or have charged off balances. Each service will only be counted once. For example: if a member has an account with multiple share certificates, those certificates would be counted as ONE qualified service. Reward is available for up to two account numbers per primary member.
2Service must have active use with at least one posted transaction in November. Using the Educators Mobile Banking app qualifies as Mobile Banking.
3Loan and deposit accounts must have a balance greater than zero on Nov. 30 to qualify. The Rapid Relief Loan, Fresh Start Loan and Credit Rebuilder Loan do not qualify for the reward.

Educators Credit Union makes bears to donate to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin

On Monday, Oct. 8, Educators Credit Union staff stuffed nearly 600 Build-A-Bear Workshop bear cubs to donate to local charitable organizations.

More than 500 Educators Credit Union employees met at the Crowne Plaza Milwaukee Airport Hotel for Now to Wow, an annual gathering where the organization provides crucial training and team building opportunities.

As the 2018 event was wrapping up, event organizers announced a big surprise: Educators Credit Union would be making bears! Not only were they making bears, but most of the bears made would be donated to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

“We are always looking for ways the credit union can help our communities,” said Educators Credit Union CEO Linda Hoover. “Last year, we built 50 bikes for area children. This year, we’re giving hundreds of bears to sick kids so that they can have something to love and hug while in the hospital.”

Each Educators Credit Union employee was given their own bear cub and Build-A-Bear staff took the stage to help everyone in the room make a furry friend with love. After warming the bear’s heart, putting the heart in the bear, pulling on a bear cub-sized Educators t-shirt and filling out the birth certificate, Build-A-Bear staff completed a quality assurance check on every furry friend. Once the bears met Build-A-Bear’s expectations, they were prepped to be shipped out to their new homes.

“It was an amazing and heartwarming opportunity,” said Educators employee Madeline Jimenez. “We got to be part of something that will make so many kids happy. It’s a great feeling.”

In total, Educators Credit Union purchased 600 bears from Build-A-Bear. Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin will take as many bears as they need for their patients and the rest will be given to other local children’s charities ahead of the holidays.

New Apple Mobile Banking Updates

Another update is coming to Mobile Banking for Apple users! Educators Credit Union is always working with our Mobile Banking developer to give you the best experience possible within our app.

This latest update will:

  • Make general improvements to biometric authentication tools like fingerprint and face scan logins.
  • Adjust the current Snapshot feature to improve functionality.

This latest update will limit app availability to Apple devices that have iOS 10 and higher. This change is to ensure user data is secure since Apple will no longer be providing security updates to the phone. Users may still be able to use Online Banking in their internet browser on their smart device.

More updates are coming soon! Keep an eye on www.ecu.com and our social media channels for the latest.

Why Warranty? Because it Helps

Educators Credit Union is helping members save hundreds of thousands of dollars this year with our Vehicle Service Agreement from IWS.

IWS offers affordable extended warranties that help Educators Credit Union members save. In 2018, we have saved members $204,365 in mechanical breakdown repairs thanks to these vehicle warranties!

  • Any Educators Credit Union member can add on an IWS Vehicle Service Agreement as long as their vehicle is eligible.
  • IWS warranties are affordably priced but still offer the same protections as plans that are much more expensive.
  • You don’t need an Educators Credit Union vehicle loan to qualify for our warranty. If you have a non-Educators loan, ask for a What’s Your Score?® credit report so that we can see if Educators Credit Union can save you money by refinancing your loan.

You can add your name to the more than 575 people who’ve protected themselves so far this year with a Vehicle Service Agreement. Visit any Educators Credit Union branch and ask the greeter to speak with a Member Finance Representative or Vehicle Specialist about these warranties today.

Get your entries in for the first Saver’s Sweepstakes drawing!

It’s the last week to earn entries for the September Saver’s Sweepstakes drawing! In October, at least one Educators Credit Union member will win $5,000 for saving money in their Saver’s Sweepstakes account.

The Saver’s Sweepstakes is a prize-based savings account that gives members the chance to win money each month. All they have to do is open the account and save at least $25 each month to earn an entry. Each entry counts towards that month’s $100 prize drawing, that quarter’s $1,000 drawing and the $5,000 grand prize drawing.

To kick off the Saver’s Sweepstakes, at least one Educators Credit Union member will win $5,000. Just open your account at any Educators branch or by calling 262.886.5900 and start saving before Saturday, Sep. 29. The winner will be announced on Thursday, Oct. 18.

For more information on the Saver’s Sweepstakes, click here.

There is no minimum deposit required to open a Saver’s Sweepstakes account. This sweepstakes is open to Wisconsin and Minnesota residents only. Entries are tallied for the primary owner on the account. Fiduciary and business accounts are not eligible. The Saver’s Sweepstakes conducts statewide drawings. Each individual — limited by social security number — can have a maximum six entries per month, 18 entries per quarter and 72 entries per year in the statewide drawing. Do These Tasks Now to Protect Your Home Later

Fall is right around the corner and it’s the perfect time to start preparing your home for the winter. Not only is it easier to take care of these tasks while the weather is still warmer, but it can also end up saving you hundreds or thousands of dollars in the future.

  • Change your furnace filter. Most homes should change their furnace filters every few months. While a lot of people won’t do that, replacing it every season can go a long way to keeping your furnace healthy. Should it break, you’ll be looking at a huge cost for your home.
    • You should also want to consider having a professional come in and giving the furnace a quick tune-up.
  • Clear your gutters. Few things can lead to a costly repair as quickly as water damage. If you want to avoid water damaging your home, clear your gutters, so all of the rain and melting snow is being sent away from the foundation.
  • Shut off and run your outside faucets. Don’t get stuck having a flooded basement because of a burst pipe. Find the shutoff valve for your home’s faucets leading outside and turn them off. Then run the tap until no more water is coming out.
  • Seal your windows. One of the easiest ways to spend a lot of money in the winter is by heating your home. If your windows aren’t properly caulked and treated, heat can easily escape. Go outside and look at each window to ensure you’re keeping all of the heat in.
  • Check your outside vents. Not only will clearing your outside vents keep your furnace running efficiently, but any debris preventing air from leaving these exits is a fire hazard. Make the rounds and see that any vent has nothing blocking it, or event coming close.

Have any other tips homeowners should know about preparing for the winter? Add a comment below to help everyone save money and be safe.

Helping Students Get on the Road with MPS Drive

Educators Credit Union is working with Milwaukee Public Schools to give high school students an experience many haven’t had in school for years: driver’s education.

Through additional funding, MPS offers its students driver’s education through a program called MPS Drive. The program offers low-cost education and assistance so  more students have the opportunity to get licensed.

“This program promotes three things: equity, workforce development and public safety,” said MPS Recreation Coordinator Annie McGinnity Kubes. “Our goal is that all of our MPS students are graduating with a diploma and a valid driver’s license. We know that employment outcomes are significantly higher when those two things are paired together.”

In its first two and a half years, MPS Drive helped more than 3,300 students. Nearly 97% of those students passed their temporary license examination.

“This shows that it’s something our young people are invested in and work hard for,” said Kubes.

Educators Credit Union reached out to the program after Vice President of Auto & Lease Donna Klug heard a news spot about the program.

“I was driving to work one day and heard a blurb about MPS getting a second year of funding for this driver’s education program,” said Klug. “It benefited inner city kids who couldn’t otherwise afford it, and I thought, ‘That’s something that Educators would definitely want to be a part of.’”

Educators Credit Union has since provided financial backing and gotten involved in the classroom. Employees from Educators Credit Union come to classes and teach students about the basics of car buying, the costs of owning a car, maintaining and building credit to help finance a car, and much more.

“Educators has been a tremendous champion of the program,” said Kubes. “They are really helping students understand the financial component that comes with having a license.”

It’s an important lesson that Educators Credit Union is passionate about supporting. It’s important to help provide an opportunity to these students that they haven’t had for the last decade.

“I just paid for driver’s education for my daughter, and it was $300,” said Klug. “If you have a family that can’t afford it, you don’t get the chance to learn these lessons. Who’s going to teach these students that lesson? It’s also an opportunity for that household. The kids can now get themselves to and from work and may be able to help their family get to work.”

Educators Credit Union Helps Fill Milwaukee’s Backpacks

Educators Credit Union opened its doors to 88Nine and the Milwaukee Business Journal for the third annual No Empty Backpacks School Supply Drive. It was yet another successful year, as Educators Credit Union and other Milwaukee businesses were able to collect 50,137 items for students at eight Milwaukee Public Schools elementary schools. That’s 13,000 more items than we collected last year!

This year’s drive started on July 23, when supply drive bins were dropped off at Educators Credit Union branches. People looking to donate could find a list of needed supplies on the 88Nine website. They could then have the supplies shipped directly to 88Nine or drop them off at one of the 27 donation locations throughout the city.

Volunteers then came to 88Nine to help sort the supplies for delivery on Wednesday, Aug. 29. Once they finished, boxes lined the 88Nine studios and waited to be shipped out for the new school year.

The supplies collected were donated to Craig Montessori School, Clara Barton School, Andrew S. Douglas School, Lloyd Barbee Montessori School, Dr. Martin Luther King School, Kagel School, Starms Early Childhood and Ralph H. Metcalfe School in Milwaukee.

Thank you to everyone who donated or helped support this cause. You truly are making a difference in our communities!

Avoid Eating Away Your Money

When of the easiest ways to lose out on your money is from an everyday necessity: food. Often, we’re overpaying to eat out or buying food that ends up going to waste. So, how do we save and get money back while still eating the food we love? Here are four tips to save but not lose out on the food we like:

  •  Buy frozen. Frozen food lasts longer than fresh food. Frozen veggies, fruits and meat can last months compared to the days that they’ll last in the fridge or on the counter. Frozen foods can also be cheaper than the fresh stuff.
  •  Make a meal plan. Plan everything to a T, even the nights you can eat out. By having each meal carefully coordinated, it can limit that urge to head to the drive-thru and grab something on the way home. Take it a step further and prepare your meals at the start of the week.
  •  Check the expiration dates. Food waste is a big problem, especially for your wallet. Getting even an extra day can go a long way to avoiding having to throw your food in the garbage or down the drain. It also saves you a trip to the store to get something to replace the food that went bad.
  •  Plan ahead and take advantage of sales. Coupon clipping is nearly extinct, but that shouldn’t mean we don’t take careful consideration into how we shop. Pull up the store’s website and plan on taking advantage of specials for a day or week. This even works for saving while eating out! Many restaurants offer free kids meals during the week with the purchase of an adult entree.

As with most things, it’s easier said than done, but working towards using some of these tips can lead to extra savings. Over time, those savings will stack up and you’ll see the difference in your account. Comment below with more helpful tips for saving on the cost of food!

The annual run is a fun way to support the local community. Participants can try their hand – or better yet, feet – at the 10-Mile Run, the 4-Mile Run, or the 4- and 2-Mile Fun Run/Walk.

To help you prep for the big event, we have some tips on running that 10-mile course:

  • Start slow, stay slow. Conserving your energy is key. Going too fast can lead to burn out in the final miles.
  • Bring a snack. Eating a snack within the first 30 minutes of a run can help keep you energized for the duration.
  • Drink, drink and drink some more. We all know hydration is important. Start drinking water two hour before the race and plan to get a mid-run drink in at least. If it’s hot or humid, you need to drink more water to make up for it.

The YMCA Lighthouse Run supports the Strong Kids Campaign. Through this program, thousands get support to attend the YMCA and its programs through scholarships.

When you’re at the Lighthouse Run, look for Educators Credit Union’s Interactive Trailer! We’ll be at the event giving lessons about our credit union and providing great credit union swag.

Educators Credit Union is proud to sponsor this Racine community staple.

Educators Credit Union celebrates 11 co-op students

On Thursday, May 24, Educators Credit Union celebrated a year of success with co-op students.

Educators’ co-ops are area high school students that are seeking real-world job experience. The 2017-18 class of co-ops were also the first group to work at the credit union’s Home Office. Traditionally, the co-ops work as tellers, serving members face-to-face. This group also worked in our Member Response Center, Accounting Department, and Interactive Teller Department.

This year’s students are Zach Bauer from Waukesha High School, Diana Casco from Racine Park High School, Nalah McWhorter from Racine Park High School, Keydi Osorio from Kenosha Bradford High School, Ryan Pearson from Elkhorn High School, Bryanna Prochnow from Racine Park High School, Jazmine Tidwell from Racine Park High School, De’Andra Tucker from Kenosha Bradford High School, Pazong Vang from Milwaukee Hmong American Peace Academy, Brittany Wit from South Milwaukee High School, and Elijah Xiong from Milwaukee Hmong American Peace Academy.

The co-op students earn a wage and credit for their experience. In order to take part in the program, they must be taking part in one of the co-op classes at area high schools. The students are also required to do some homework. An added benefit is that the co-ops had the opportunity to practice professional communication using email, work on their soft-skills, shadow additional departments to learn their responsibilities, and complete a practice job interview.

Next year, Educators plans to hire 14 co-op students and introduce even more departments to the program.

Educators Awards 35 Scholarships to Local High School Seniors

Educators Credit Union celebrated success and excellence at its 2018 scholarship recipient dinners in Janesville and Milwaukee.

Educators awarded our 2018 scholarship to 35 graduating seniors that attend schools throughout our 11-county service area. This is the largest group of scholarship winners in the history of this program. Each student will receive $2,000 to help pay for college.

“My mom and I are both going to be paying for college, so this will help both of us,” said Ben Hufendick, a scholarship winner from St. Joseph Catholic Academy in Kenosha. “She was in the room with me when I got the letter and she was probably happier than I was.”

In order to be awarded a scholarship, the students had to demonstrate one or more of Educators’ core values, attend a high school in our service area, be eligible to graduate at the end of the 2017-18 school year, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 by the end of the first semester, be accepted by an accredited college or technical school, and be the primary owner of an Educators Credit Union account.

“This is an amazing group of students,” said Educators’ Director of Community Engagement Victor Frasher. “Every year, we get hundreds of submissions from truly incredible people. It was hard for our Scholarship Committee to make a final selection, but we ended with 35 exceptional students who we believe are going on to do big things.”

These students certainly have big ambitions. At the ceremony, many announced their plans for the future. Some wanted to be biomedical engineers, and others wanted to be politicians. One student is going to school to become an astronaut, while another is going to Harvard in the hopes of becoming a neurologist.

“This past summer, I studied at the Harvard Center for Brain Science,” said Sophia Sun from Brookfield Central High School as she explained her future ambitions. “I’m looking forward to continuing my research in this lab.”

It wasn’t hard to tell that the students were ready to head off to college and start the next step in working toward their dreams.

“This is the first time I’ll ever go to school by myself,” said Nancy Suarez from Parker High School. “It’s a chance to get to know myself and to see what I can do on my own.”

Calling All High School Graduates

Congratulations to all the graduating high school seniors! You made it! Although it’s quite a relief to finally be done with high school, many of you only have a few months before heading off to college in the fall.

We have put together some tips to help you plan for your next adventure.

  • Build Relationships Right Away:
    • If you have been assigned a random roommate, reach out to them! Introduce yourself and get to know them. Make sure to ask them about their preferences, study habits, sleep schedule and even what they have already purchased for the room, so you know what to buy. It helps to establish this rapport right away so that your year will go smoothly.
    • It also helps to get in contact with a current student. The girl leading my freshmen orientation took me under her wing and gave me advice about so many things I wasn’t even thinking about. These students already know where to find the best deals on food, the best activities, where you can have fun, and so much more. It helps to get the inside scoop from a student who has been at your university.
  • Look Into Your Major’s Requirements:
    • If you already know what degree you want to pursue, it’s a smart idea to look into class requirements for your major and/or minor. If you don’t know what you want to study, get your hands on the undergraduate catalog to browse the options. Doing this will help you eliminate options you don’t want to pursue or maybe even spark a new interest.
  • Utilize All the Student Discounts Possible:
    • Trust me, there’s more than you think. College is expensive, but finding those discounts can save you on everyday purchases. Do some research about the city and campus, or visit our College Students Only board (LINK) on the Educators Pinterest page to find some great opportunities to save money.
  • Tackle Your Student Loans:
    • It’s crucial to make sure that you are looking for the best way to pay for college. Do your research, ask the advice of others who you trust and make the decision that is best for you as an individual.
    • If you need to take out a student loan, start applying as soon as possible. This is the most likely way to ensure you have the money you need for the semester. Don’t forget, you need to apply for student loans each semester before the semester starts, it’s not something that magically appears at school for you.
    • Did you know that Educators’ can help you pay for college? It’s hard to bridge the gap between scholarships, grants and federal loans and the actual cost of attending college. That’s why we teamed up with LendKey to make paying for college easy and repayment as painless as possible.

Teacher Appreciation Week – Mr. Alex Williams

Our final interview for teacher appreciation week is with Alex Williams. Alex works in Milwaukee at the Barack Obama School of Career and Technical Education. He is an AmeriCorps Member for City Year, a program that hires tutors and mentors for students of Milwaukee Public Schools. These tutors create relationships with the students and provide extra resources to help them with their educational career.

Alex went to Brown Deer High School in Milwaukee and then continued on to Ball State University in Indiana for his first year, where he was majoring in Telecommunications. He realized quickly that wasn’t his passion. He then transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he started narrowing down what he wanted to do. He decided to major in History but has decided to go back to get his teaching certification upon realizing that is his passion.

While he was in an education class, a City Year recruiter came in and explained what they were all about. He had done some tutoring in the past and thought this would be an excellent opportunity to support local students. He loved that City Year offered the chance to be in a school, all day, working with students and teachers. City Year played a prominent role in cementing his desire to teach and be involved with educational policy. He is extremely passionate about educational laws and making sure that every student has an equal opportunity to receive a substantial education.

“If you’re passionate about something, you are going to put more energy into it,” Williams said.

Alex enjoys designing lesson plans for his 7th- and 8th-grade students that challenge them to think about their life.

“I love designing lesson plans that are culturally relevant and peak my student’s interests,” said Williams.

Williams reaches out to his students to learn about their interests asks so that he can develop lessons that keep the students engaged. He believes this makes tutoring go smoothly, and loves to see where their minds go when they’re asking questions and remaining engaged.

“I love the ‘ah ha’ moments. Or when they’re really proud to show you the improvements they’ve made.”

The school just went through their testing, and he was so thrilled about the progress his students made but even prouder to see how enthusiastic they were when they reached their goals.

At the beginning of the year, Williams encountered his biggest challenge: building a rapport with his students. It was difficult for him at first because the students didn’t know him and he didn’t know the students. He had to dive in and start understanding his students and how they learned.

“We were all feeling each other out, and I was trying to learn everyone’s learning styles,” Williams said, recalling the start of the year. “I was trying to figure out who these students couldn’t work with, or who might be more of a challenge to work with.”

Although he loves designing lessons plans, it was a challenge at the beginning because he had to create lesson plans that benefit several different students at one time.

“It was hard because they all have very different personalities, which can be difficult, especially with the bigger personalities with lots of energy. But even that got easier as we became more comfortable with each other.”

When asked about a teacher or professor who inspired him, his former History teacher and football coach immediately came to mind. He was a significant influence on Alex and part of the reason he wanted to go into teaching. He loved that he always checked on his students.

“It made me realize that teachers weren’t just people handing out grades but they can be personable mentors. They are people too!”

Williams believes his greatest success in tutoring has been how students have normalized achievement. He loves that he plays a part in instilling a higher work ethic into their development.

“I have students ask for additional work and assignments and even for books to read over the summer. Because of the relationships I have developed, they trust me, and my tutoring is so much more effective”.

Educators Credit Union encourages you to reach out to your teachers and thank them for all that they do. If you are looking for a creative way to show your teachers appreciation, head over to the Educators’ Pinterest page and check out the teacher appreciation board.
